On July 7, 1893, the 22-year-old farmhand murdered Daniel and Barbara Kreider and four of their children on their farm southeast of Cando, North Dakota. He confessed, citing romantic rejection by one of the daughters. He was one of the very few people ever executed in North Dakota history.
