Convicted of murdering South Dakota law enforcement officer Special Agent Tom Matthews. Sitts had a criminal history and was on the run at the time of the killing. He was executed at 12:15 a.m. and reportedly taunted the executioner with his last words. His body was unclaimed; he had arranged to donate his corneas.

Background

George Sidney Sitts (1913โ€“1947) was executed by electrocution at the South Dakota Penitentiary in Sioux Falls on April 8, 1947. He was the first (and only) person ever put to death by electric chair in South Dakota history.
