Arrested in 1917 and convicted of murder for the arsenic poisoning of boarder Franklin R. Andrews; originally sentenced to death. The Connecticut Supreme Court of Errors ordered a new trial, after which she was again convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment.
Background
Amy Archer-Gilligan ran the "Archer Home for the Elderly and Infirm" in Windsor, Connecticut, and was convicted of poisoning a resident. Her case is commonly cited as an inspiration for the play "Arsenic and Old Lace." She died at Connecticut Valley Hospital in Middletown in 1962.
