Background

Jereboam Orville Beauchamp (1802–1826) was a central figure in the Beauchamp–Sharp Tragedy (also called the Kentucky Tragedy). He was convicted of the murder of Kentucky legislator and former Attorney General Solomon P. Sharp and hanged in 1826. His wife Anna Cooke Beauchamp committed suicide on the day of his execution; the couple was buried together in an embrace in a single coffin at their request. The case was a national sensation and inspired literature, including works by Edgar Allan Poe.
