Convicted of murdering three gold prospectors (Con Sullivan, Florence Sullivan, and P.J. Rooney) on Unimak Island after stealing from their camp. Hanged in Nome on September 19, 1902 — Alaska’s first legal federal execution. The hanging reportedly took nearly ten minutes.

Background

Fred Hardy was convicted in one of the earliest major murder trials in the Alaska Territory. He was the first person legally executed by hanging under U.S. federal authority in Alaska.
