Criminal History (Public Record)

Convicted of first-degree murder in the Molly Maguires trials for the 1875 killing of mine superintendent John P. Jones at Lansford. One of ten men executed on "Black Thursday," June 21, 1877 (four at Mauch Chunk, six at Pottsville). Hanged at the Carbon County prison in Mauch Chunk (now Jim Thorpe).

Background

Alexander Campbell was an Irish-born miner and alleged member of the Molly Maguires who lived in the anthracite coal region of Pennsylvania. He operated a tavern in Summit Hill and was active in the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH).
