Criminal History (Public Record)

Convicted in 1898 (second trial) of the 1897 murder of his second wife, Louisa Bicknese Luetgert. He was accused of dissolving her body in a large sausage vat containing lye and potash at his factory (the "Sausage Vat Murder"). No body was recovered, but strong circumstantial evidence, including her wedding ring found in the vat, led to conviction. Sentenced to life imprisonment at Joliet; died in prison in 1899.
